How Does Infinite Campus Calculate Grades?

Ever wondered how Infinite Campus calculates your grades? This guide breaks down every formula the system uses — weighted categories, total points, and the confusing weight-redistribution trick that happens when a category is empty.

The Three Grade Calculation Methods in Infinite Campus

Understanding how Infinite Campus calculates grades starts with knowing which calculation method your teacher selected. Infinite Campus offers three Grade Calc Options, and the one your class uses determines exactly how your assignments combine into a single overall grade.

Weighted Categories

Each category (Tests, Quizzes, Homework) has a percentage weight. The most common method in middle and high schools.

Total Points

All points earned divided by all points possible. No categories, no weights — just raw points.

Assignment Score %

Each assignment's percentage is averaged equally, regardless of point value.

Your teacher selects the method inside the IC gradebook under Grade Calc Options. You can usually tell which method is used by checking whether your class shows category weights in the portal. If you see percentages next to category names, your class uses Weighted Categories.

Weighted Categories — The Most Common IC Method

In the weighted-categories method, your teacher assigns a percentage weight to each grading category. The weights must total 100%. Here is the formula Infinite Campus uses:

Grade = S (Category % Earned × Category Weight) ÷ S (Active Category Weights)

Where Category % Earned = Points Earned in Category ÷ Points Possible in Category

Worked Example

Suppose your class has these categories and your scores so far:

Category Weight Points Earned Points Possible Category %
Tests 45% 172 200 86.0%
Quizzes 30% 135 150 90.0%
Homework 25% 95 100 95.0%

Calculation:

= (0.860 × 45) + (0.900 × 30) + (0.950 × 25)

= 38.70 + 27.00 + 23.75

= 89.45 ÷ 100 = 89.45% ? B+

Total Points — The Simplest Method

Some teachers skip category weights entirely and use the total-points method. This approach simply adds up every point you've earned and divides by every point possible across all assignments.

Grade = Total Points Earned ÷ Total Points Possible × 100

Using the same data: (172 + 135 + 95) ÷ (200 + 150 + 100) = 402 ÷ 450 = 89.33%

Notice the total-points grade (89.33%) differs from the weighted grade (89.45%) because point values of individual assignments influence the result differently than category weights do.

Assignment Score Percents Method

This less common method converts each individual assignment to a percentage, then averages all the percentages equally. A 5-point homework assignment counts the same as a 100-point test.

Grade = (S Individual Assignment %) ÷ Number of Assignments

Example: Three assignments scored 80%, 90%, 100%. Grade = (80 + 90 + 100) ÷ 3 = 90.0%

Empty-Category Weight Redistribution

This is the feature that confuses students the most. When a weighted category has zero scores, Infinite Campus doesn't just ignore it — it redistributes that category's weight proportionally among the categories that do have scores.

Redistribution Example

Original weights: Tests = 60%, Quizzes = 30%, Homework = 10%

If you have no test scores yet, IC removes Tests and redistributes proportionally:

New Quizzes Weight = 30 ÷ (30 + 10) = 75.0%

New Homework Weight = 10 ÷ (30 + 10) = 25.0%

This means early in the semester your Homework grade has far more impact than you'd expect. Once test scores are entered, the weights snap back to the original values.

How Infinite Campus Converts Percentages to Letter Grades

After calculating your overall percentage, Infinite Campus applies your school's grading scale to assign a letter grade. While districts can customize these ranges, the most common scale is:

Letter Grade Percentage Range GPA Points
A 93–100% 4.0
A- 90–92% 3.7
B+ 87–89% 3.3
B 83–86% 3.0
B- 80–82% 2.7
C+ 77–79% 2.3
C 73–76% 2.0
C- 70–72% 1.7
D 60–69% 1.0
F Below 60% 0.0

Why Your Infinite Campus Grade Looks Wrong

If you've done the math and it doesn't match what Infinite Campus shows, here are the most common culprits:

Empty Category Redistribution

If any category has zero scores, IC is silently redistributing weights. This is the #1 reason grades look "off" early in the semester.

Excused vs. Missing Assignments

An "excused" assignment is excluded from calculations entirely. A "missing" assignment may count as zero — dragging down your grade significantly.

Rounding Differences

IC may display rounded percentages but use unrounded values internally. A displayed 89.5% might actually be 89.47% internally, giving you a B+ instead of an A-.

Custom Grading Scales

Your district may not use the standard 90/80/70/60 scale. Some districts set A at 92%, others at 90%. Always check your syllabus for the exact cutoffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Infinite Campus calculate my overall grade?

IC supports several methods. The most common is Weighted Categories, where each category has a percentage weight. IC multiplies each category's earned/possible ratio by its weight, sums the results, and divides by total active weight to get your overall percentage.

What happens when a grade category has no scores?

IC redistributes that category's weight proportionally among the remaining categories. For example, if Tests (60%) has no scores and Quizzes (30%) and Homework (10%) do, IC recalculates as Quizzes = 75% and Homework = 25%.

What is the difference between Weighted Categories and Total Points?

Weighted Categories assigns percentage weights to each category regardless of point values. Total Points simply adds all points earned and divides by total points possible — no category weights apply.

Why does my calculated grade differ from Infinite Campus?

The most common causes are empty-category weight redistribution, excused assignments being excluded, internal rounding differences, or a non-standard grading scale. Use our grade calculator to verify your math.

Can teachers choose different calculation methods?

Yes. Teachers select the Grade Calc Option for each class in their gradebook settings. The three main options are Weighted Categories (most common), Total Points, and Assignment Score Percents.
