How Weighted Grading Works in Infinite Campus

The Infinite Campus weighted grade calculator above replicates the exact formula your school's gradebook uses. Weighted category grading is the most common calculation method in Infinite Campus — used by the majority of middle and high schools across the 3,200+ districts that run IC. Understanding how it works helps you predict your grade and plan which assignments matter most.

The Weighted Category Formula

Infinite Campus calculates weighted grades using this formula, which our tool applies automatically:

Weighted Grade = S (Category % Earned × Category Weight) ÷ S (Active Category Weights)

Where Category % Earned = Total Points Earned in Category ÷ Total Points Possible in Category

Example: Tests (40% weight) — you earned 170/200 = 85%. Homework (60% weight) — you earned 285/300 = 95%. Your weighted grade = (0.85×40 + 0.95×60) ÷ 100 = 91.0%

Step-by-Step: Using This Weighted Calculator

1

Set Up Categories

Add your grading categories (Tests, Quizzes, Homework, etc.) and enter the percentage weight for each — just like your teacher set up in IC.

2

Enter Assignments

Add assignments to each category with your points earned and points possible. Add as many assignments as you have.

3

See Your Grade

Your weighted grade updates in real time — matching the exact calculation Infinite Campus performs behind the scenes.

Common Weight Setups in Infinite Campus

Teachers configure category weights differently depending on subject, school policy, and district guidelines. Here are the most common setups found across IC districts:

Setup Name Categories & Weights Common In
Standard Tests 40% / Projects 40% / Homework 20% Science, Social Studies
Mastery-Based Tests 45% / Classwork 45% / Homework 10% Math, English
Assessment-Heavy Assessments 60% / Practice 40% AP/Honors classes
Detailed Tests 35% / Quizzes 25% / Projects 25% / Participation 15% Electives, Language Arts
Zero-Homework Tests 50% / Projects 30% / Classwork 20% / Homework 0% Standards-based districts

What Happens When a Category Has No Grades?

One of the most confusing aspects of Infinite Campus is weight redistribution. When a category has no scores yet, IC doesn't just ignore it — it redistributes that category's weight proportionally among categories that do have scores.

Weight Redistribution Example

Original weights: Tests = 60%, Quizzes = 30%, Homework = 10%

Scenario: No test grades entered yet

IC recalculates as: Quizzes = 30÷40 × 100 = 75%, Homework = 10÷40 × 100 = 25%

This is why your grade may look different early in the semester when not all categories have scores yet.

"Weighted category grading is configured in over 80% of Infinite Campus middle and high school classrooms, making it the most important calculation method for students to understand."

Weighted vs. Total Points Grading

Not sure if your class uses weighted categories or total points? Here's how to tell — and why it matters for calculating your grade. For the full comparison, see our guide on how Infinite Campus calculates grades.

Weighted Categories

  • • Each category has a percentage weight
  • • A 10-point quiz and 100-point test in different categories are weighted by category, not points
  • • Used by most IC middle/high schools
  • This calculator is designed for this method

Total Points

  • • All points earned ÷ all points possible
  • • A 100-point test naturally counts 10× more than a 10-point quiz
  • • Simpler to understand
  • • Use our main grade calculator for this method

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Infinite Campus calculate weighted grades?

IC multiplies each category's earned/possible ratio by its assigned weight, sums the weighted results, then divides by the total weight of categories that have scores. This produces a weighted percentage that converts to your letter grade.

What happens when an IC category has no grades?

Infinite Campus redistributes the empty category's weight proportionally among categories that do have scores. This means your grade early in the semester may be calculated differently than expected. As you get scores in all categories, the weights return to their original values.

What are common category weight setups in Infinite Campus?

The most common setups are: Tests 40% / Projects 40% / Homework 20%; Tests 45% / Classwork 45% / Homework 10%; and Assessments 60% / Practice 40%. Some standards-based districts set Homework to 0%. Use the "Load Preset" button above to try these configurations.

Do my category weights need to total 100%?

Yes. Infinite Campus expects weights to total 100%. If they don't, IC normalizes them by dividing each weight by the total — which can produce unexpected results. Our calculator shows a progress bar and warning to ensure your weights total exactly 100%.

How can I find out my category weights?

Log into Infinite Campus and open your gradebook for any class. The category names and weights are listed at the top of the grade detail view. You can also ask your teacher or check your class syllabus — most teachers list their grading policies there. For help navigating IC, see our guide to checking grades on Infinite Campus.
